Options for complex cases: zygomatic, nasal and pterygoid implants

Dental implants have revolutionised the field of dentistry by providing effective solutions for patients who have lost teeth due to various reasons, such as decay, gum disease, or trauma.

Traditional dental implants have been widely used to restore the functionality and aesthetics of a patient’s smile. However, not all patients are suitable candidates for standard implants due to insufficient bone density in the jaw.

Let’s delve into these 3 types of dental implants for complex cases: zygomatic, nasal and pterygoid.

  1. Zygomatic Dental Implants

Zygomatic dental implants, also known as zygoma implants, are designed for patients with severe maxillary (upper jaw) bone loss. These implants provide a solution when standard implants are not feasible due to inadequate bone structure. Zygomatic implants are anchored in the zygomatic bone, which is part of the cheekbone. The key differences and characteristics of zygomatic implants include:

Location: Zygomatic implants are anchored in the cheekbone, bypassing the need for placing implants in the maxillary bone.

Surgical Complexity: The surgical procedure for zygomatic implants is more complex than traditional implants. It often requires experienced oral surgeons.

Indications: Zygomatic implants are primarily recommended for patients with significant maxillary bone loss, particularly in the posterior regions or to avoid sinus lifting.

Rehabilitation Time: The healing and rehabilitation period for zygomatic implants is usually longer due to the extensive nature of the surgery.

  1. Nasal Dental Implants

Nasal dental implants, sometimes referred to as nasal floor implants, are a solution for individuals who have lost upper front teeth and have insufficient bone volume in the nasal area. These implants are specifically designed to provide support for dental restorations in the anterior maxilla. Key characteristics and differences of nasal implants include:

Location: Nasal implants are placed in the nasal floor, providing stability for the replacement teeth in the upper front region.

Indications: Nasal implants are suitable for patients who require single or multiple tooth replacements in the upper front area of the mouth.

Surgical Technique: The placement of nasal implants is considered less invasive compared to zygomatic implants, making them a practical choice for many patients.

Rehabilitation Time: Nasal implants typically have a shorter healing and rehabilitation period, making them a quicker solution for front teeth replacement.

  1. Pterygoid Dental Implants

Pterygoid dental implants, also known as pterygoid plate implants, are a specialised option for individuals with extreme maxillary atrophy. They provide an alternative when traditional implant placement is not feasible due to severe bone loss. Key features and distinctions of pterygoid implants include:

Location: Pterygoid implants are anchored in the pterygoid bone, which is located in the posterior region of the maxilla.

Surgical Technique: The placement of pterygoid implants is typically less complex than zygomatic implants but requires specialised training and experience.

Indications: Pterygoid implants are suitable for patients with significant maxillary bone loss, especially in the posterior areas, and can support full arch restorations.

Rehabilitation Time: The recovery time for pterygoid implants varies but is generally shorter than zygomatic implants due to their posterior location.

The choice between zygomatic, nasal, and pterygoid dental implants depends on various factors, including the patient’s specific needs, the location of missing teeth, and the extent of bone loss.

These specialised solutions highlight dentistry’s commitment to personalised care, with ongoing advancements promising even more tailored and effective options for patients in the future.
